Guiding Principals

Effective use of metrics for monitoring student performance and outcomes can help teachers and administrators ensure students have every opportunity to stay on track to graduate. Guiding principles that drive the dashboard content and design include:

  • Metrics are grounded in research
  • Metrics represent leading indicators of student performance
  • Data is presented through a user-interface that is intuitive and user-friendly for educators
  • Insightful analysis of data guides early intervention for students in need

Metric Categories

Dashboard metrics can be categorized in a number of ways:

  • Elementary

By the type or category of metric content

  • Information/Background: basic information about a student, campus or district including demographics, program participation, and other student profile information
  • Attendance and Discipline: Students are present and ready to learn
  • Standardized Tests: Students are meeting the standard level of achievement on standardized assessments
  • Other Assessments: Students are making adequate progress and growth across formative and summative assessments
  • Advanced Academics: Students are working to their full potential in advanced courses
  • Graduation and Promotion: Students are ready for promotions and graduation
  • College Readiness: Students are college and career ready
  • Postsecondary Success: Students are successful in a postsecondary setting
  • Staff: Teachers are highly qualified and effective
  • Operations: Schools are effective and well run

The collection of metrics is organized by category of metric. The content has been organized into chapters and subchapters which provide an overview of the metric content. Within each subchapter are links to more detailed technical information which serve as a guide for metric implementation. Detailed technical information is available at the entity level (student and campus) and includes the metric value definition, how metric data elements map to the Canonical Data Model, business rules, user interface notes and related implementation considerations.

The metric collection will continue to be updated in the future and will include additions such as district level, operational, and post-secondary metrics.

The documents shared here are in draft form and are based on Phase 2 of the District Connections Database project. The site content will continue to be updated to reflect experiences and observations from future phases.
